Menopause affects far more than periods. As estrogen and progesterone rise and fall through perimenopause, women can notice changes in sleep, mood, skin, joints, digestion, bladder and more. Many of these symptoms are never linked to hormones, so women go months or years without the right help.

This guide brings together every symptom our doctors at NuHer, Nariman Point, Mumbai, have written about. Each link opens a detailed article on why the symptom happens, what you can do at home, and when to see a doctor.

Perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause

  • Perimenopause is the transition, usually starting in the early to mid 40s (sometimes the late 30s). Hormones swing up and down, periods become irregular, and most symptoms begin here.
  • Menopause is confirmed after 12 months without a period. In India it happens on average around 46 to 48, a few years earlier than the global average of 51.
  • Postmenopause is the time after that. Some symptoms ease, while bone, heart and vaginal health need more attention.

Hot flashes and temperature

Sleep, mood and mind

Periods, breasts and fertility

Vaginal, sexual and urinary health

Bones, joints, muscles and nerves

Skin, hair and nails

When to see a doctor straight away

Most menopause symptoms are uncomfortable rather than dangerous. See a doctor promptly if you have:

  • Any bleeding after 12 months without a period
  • Very heavy bleeding, or bleeding between periods or after sex
  • A new breast lump, nipple discharge or skin change on the breast
  • Chest pain, breathlessness at rest, or fainting
  • Thoughts of self-harm or feeling unable to cope

Frequently asked questions

What are the first signs of perimenopause?

Changes in your periods (shorter or longer cycles, heavier or lighter flow) are usually the first sign. Many women also notice poorer sleep, mood changes, night sweats or new anxiety in their early to mid 40s.

At what age does menopause start in India?

Indian women reach menopause on average around 46 to 48, earlier than the global average of 51. Perimenopause symptoms can begin several years before that.

How long do menopause symptoms last?

It varies. Hot flashes typically last several years and can continue for ten or more. Vaginal and bladder symptoms tend to persist or worsen without treatment.

Can symptoms be treated without hormones?

Yes. Lifestyle changes, non-hormonal medicines, therapy and supplements all help many women. Hormone therapy is an option for some and is prescribed only after a doctor's assessment.
