How this calculator works
The calculator starts from the average age of natural menopause for Indian women, which a PAN-India survey by the Indian Menopause Society found to be 46.2 years. That is around five years earlier than in the UK, Europe or North America, where the average is about 51.
It then adjusts for the factors most consistently linked with the timing of menopause:
- Your mother's age at menopause. Daughters often reach menopause at a similar age to their mothers, so if you know your mother's age, the estimate is weighted towards it.
- Smoking. Smoking is linked with earlier menopause. A pooled analysis of 17 studies found that women who currently smoke were about twice as likely to reach menopause before 40, and about 1.8 times as likely to reach it between 40 and 44, compared with women who had never smoked.
- Your periods now. Doctors use a framework called STRAW+10 to describe the stages. Cycles that keep varying by 7 days or more suggest early perimenopause. Gaps of 60 days or more suggest late perimenopause, when the final period usually comes within about one to three years. Twelve months in a row without a period means menopause.
- Surgery. Removing both ovaries brings on menopause straight away. A hysterectomy that keeps the ovaries stops periods but not the ovaries, so menopause still happens at around the usual age.
The result is an estimated age window, not a prediction. Many other things affect the timing, and nobody can know in advance exactly when your final period will be.

| Average in India | About 46 | Indian Menopause Society PAN-India survey: 46.2 years |
| Most women | By about 55 | Mention it to your doctor if regular periods continue beyond this |
Questions women ask
Can a blood test tell me when I will reach menopause?
Not reliably. Hormone levels swing a lot in perimenopause, so a single result can be misleading. The UK's NICE guideline advises that women over 45 with typical symptoms can usually be diagnosed from their symptoms and periods alone, without blood tests. Read more about the perimenopause test.
What are the first signs that menopause is coming?
Changes in your periods are usually the first sign, often with poorer sleep, night sweats, hot flashes or mood changes. See our guide to menopause symptoms or take the free menopause test.
Can I delay menopause?
The timing is largely set by your genes and your ovaries. Not smoking is the best-known step linked with not reaching menopause earlier than you otherwise would. A healthy lifestyle cannot stop menopause, but it does protect your bones and heart through the transition.
My periods stopped before 45. What should I do?
See a doctor. Early or premature menopause has longer-term effects on bone and heart health, and treatment can help. Read about early menopause signs or book a consultation at our Nariman Point clinic or by video, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 7pm.
